Bevacizumab Combined With Chemotherapy Prolongs Survival for Some Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer
Preliminary results from a large, randomized clinical trial for patients with previously untreated advanced non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer show that those patients who received bevacizumab (Avastin™) in combination with standard chemotherapy lived longer than patients who received the same chemotherapy without bevacizumab.
Clinical Trial of Gefitinib for Advanced Lung Cancer Closes Early
Researchers have closed a randomized clinical trial comparing gefitinib (Iressa) to a placebo following chemotherapy and radiation for patients with non-small cell lung cancer that had spread only to nearby tissues or lymph nodes. Review of the interim data indicated that gefitinib would not improve survival.
Post-Surgery Chemotherapy Improves Survival in Early Lung Cancer
Two large randomized studies show that in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, treatment after surgery with chemotherapy improves overall survival compared to surgery alone. The findings help resolve a controversy over the value of post-surgical chemotherapy for early lung cancer and are likely to change the standard of care.
